Compact Fitting Room – FLOWMD

The Compact Provator (Small Volume Prover), manufactured by Flow Management Devices (FlowMD), is a high-precision calibration system designed to verify and calibrate liquid flow meters directly under real operating conditions. Acting as a known and traceable volume standard, the equipment is the ideal solution for custody transfer processes and fiscal applications, where the accuracy of flow measurements is critical to mitigate financial uncertainty and ensure the profitability of the operation.

By performing calibration based on the dual timing method (according to API MPMS Chapter 4), the system instantly calculates the Meter Factor of the meter under test. The great competitive advantage of this technology is its compact design with low product displacement, which delivers extremely fast, accurate and repeatable calibrations, eliminating the large dimensions, high cost and operational complexity of conventional ball provers.

Benefits

Very high metrological accuracy

Uncertainty of up to ±0.005% and excellent repeatability, meeting custody transfer and fiscal calibration applications.

Full compliance with international standards

Designed as per MPMS API Chapter 4 (4.2, 4.6), ensuring regulatory acceptance and reliability of results.

Simple operation and no hydraulics

Robust mechanical design, without complex release mechanisms, reducing maintenance and increasing availability.

The FLOWMD Compact Prover delivers fast, real-time calibrations with minimal pressure loss in the process. Its piston architecture with integrated poppet valve allows the piston to return to the starting position without interrupting or disturbing the main flow of the line. The use of high-performance dynamic seals, combined with the mirror finish of the chrome-plated tube, reduces seal wear and ensures dimensional stability of the test volume over long operating periods, making it a robust solution for harsh industrial refining, conveying and terminal environments.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SERIES AND MODELS:

FLOWMD offers a wide range of models to meet different flow ranges and pressure classes (up to ANSI 1500#):

  • FMD Standard Series (Models FMD-007 to FMD-200): They are the industry’s standard low-volume provers, covering flow ranges ranging from small operating flows to large terminal loading capacities.
  • FMD EV Series (Extended Volume – Models FMD-060EV, FMD-090EV and FMD-200EV): Models developed with extended test volumes to meet specific meter calibration requirements that require a longer run time or larger sampling of pulses per cycle, such as multi-beam ultrasonic meters at high flow rates.

AVAILABLE MOUNTING TYPES:

The FMD Series offers mounting flexibility to suit the physical layout of the plant or the need for calibration mobility:

  1. Stationary / Fixed Mounting:
    • How it works: The fitting room is permanently installed on a concrete base or fixed metal structure in the plant, connected by rigid pipes to the gauge calibration manifold.
    • Indication: Recommended for loading terminals, refineries and fiscal measurement stations (LACT) with high operating frequency.
  2. Portable/Mobile Mounting (Trailer or Truck-Mounted):
    • How it works: The compact fitting room is mounted on a trailer, mobile skid or truck bed, equipped with flexible high-pressure hoses and quick connections.
    • Indication: Ideal for calibration service providers or operators who need to calibrate multiple meters geographically distributed in different production wells or LACT skids.

The main applications where this type of equipment is essential include:

  • Calibration of Meters in LACT (Upstream) Units: Ensures continuous accuracy of Coriolis or turbine meters in the custody transfer of crude oil at the exit of production wells.
  • Loading and Unloading Terminals (Downstream): Calibrates the loading arm gauges of tankers, railcars or ships to avoid financial losses and ensure fiscal accuracy.
  • Oil and Gas Pipelines Transportation (Midstream): Used to verify the calibration of ultrasonic or helical turbine meters in refined products and liquid hydrocarbon transportation lines.
  • Renewable Fuels Applications: Accurate calibration of meters in biofuel transfer and blending processes, including ethanol, biodiesel, renewable diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF/Biojet).
  • Cryogenic Processes and LNG: Special models designed to operate at temperatures down to -165 °C for the calibration of flow meters at Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) terminals.
  • Carbon Capture (CO₂) Applications: Used to calibrate meters that monitor the flow of liquid or supercritical carbon dioxide (CO₂) in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) systems.
