Static Mixer – KOMAX

Komax Static Mixers, manufactured by Komax Systems Inc. and represented by Metroval, are high-efficiency in-line mixing systems designed to promote the continuous homogenization of liquids, gases, slurries, slurries and particulate solids directly in the pipeline. Using exclusively the energy from the fluid flow itself, they perform mixing, dispersion, dilution and conditioning operations with no moving parts, motors or additional energy consumption, providing high operational reliability and virtually no maintenance.

Its great differential is the exclusive patented Triple Action Mixing® technology, which combines multiple mixing mechanisms in each static element to provide high homogenization efficiency with low pressure loss and reduced hydraulic energy demand. Available in various configurations for industrial, sanitary, chemical and high viscosity fluid applications, Komax mixers offer excellent performance, low operating cost and long service life, making them an economical and highly reliable solution for the most varied industrial processes.

Benefits

Process transformation: from batch to continuous in-line mixing

It eliminates the need for brew tanks, agitators, and homogenization time, allowing mixing to occur directly in the pipeline continuously, stably, and instantaneously. This reduces process steps, eliminates waiting time, and significantly increases operational productivity.

Reduction of CAPEX and simplification of the industrial plant

Replaces complete tank mixing systems (tanks, agitators, booster pumps, and support structures) with a compact in-line installed element. This architecture reduces initial investment, simplifies plant layout, and decreases engineering and operating complexity.

High operational reliability with low life cycle cost

With no moving parts, the system virtually eliminates mechanical maintenance and additional energy consumption. It ensures continuous operation with high reliability, low operating cost, and consistent performance in the mixing of liquids, gases, and complex fluids with different viscosities.

Komax static mixers are custom-designed for operation in laminar or turbulent flow regimes, ensuring complete homogenization of the fluid along the pipe cross-section, from the core to the wall. This feature ensures uniform speed and temperature profiles, regardless of process conditions.

Komax Static Mixers use fixed internal mixing elements, developed to promote successive divisions, recombinations and changes in flow direction along the pipeline. This process generates intense homogenization of the fluids using exclusively the kinetic energy already present in the flow. The unique Triple Action Mixing technology combines flow splitting, cross-current mixing and controlled back-mixing, providing high mixing efficiency at short lengths and with low pressure drops.

Available in nominal diameters from 3/4″ to 72″ (6 feet), the equipment can be manufactured in a wide variety of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel (304/316), duplex, super duplex, titanium, PVC, fiberglass (FRP), among other specialty alloys. Its modular architecture allows for the integration of chemical injection ports, gas dispersers, and distribution manifolds, optimizing mixing efficiency directly at the system inlet.

SERIES AND CONFIGURATIONS

Komax Systems offers different series of static mixers, developed to meet specific process requirements, chemical compatibility and operating conditions:

Triple Action Series (Standard)

Established model for general industrial applications in chemical, petrochemical and water treatment processes. It uses triple-action helical elements that promote rapid mixing of reagents, pH control, chlorination and dilution of additives with high efficiency.

CT Series (Custody Transfer)

Developed for custody transfer applications in the oil and gas industry, it ensures the homogenization of free water and sediment (BSW) prior to automatic sampling. Its design incorporates a first element inclined at 30° for lifting heavy phases and a final element that eliminates axial rotation of the flow, avoiding the barber-poling effect and ensuring representativeness of the samples.

HI-PASS Series (Anti-Clog)

Designed for fluids with a high concentration of solids, fibers, or slurries, such as wastewater, treatment sludge, and polymer solutions. Its open-geometry elements and smooth surfaces minimize retention points, allowing solids passage up to 50% of nominal diameter and low-pressure drop operation, approximately one-third of the standard model.

Sanitary Series

Made of 316 stainless steel with a polished sanitary finish and Tri-Clamp connections, it is suitable for the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. It has removable internal elements and compatibility with CIP (Clean-in-Place) systems, allowing efficient cleaning and meeting strict sanitary requirements.

Coated Series (Teflon®/Kynar®)

Developed for applications with highly corrosive fluids, such as concentrated acids and strong bases. The mixer body is fully lined with PTFE (Teflon®) or PVDF (Kynar®), while the internal elements are made of fiberglass-reinforced PTFE, ensuring high chemical resistance and long service life in harsh environments.

Key industrial applications where Komax static mixers are essential include:

  • Oil Sampling in Custody Transfer: Used in pipelines and ship unloading lines to homogenize the oil and water mixture prior to autosampler, ensuring perfectly representative BS&W measurements.
  • Sludge Conditioning and Dewatering (Sanitation): The Hi-Pass model is used to mix polymers in waste sludge before centrifuges or filter presses, generating polymer savings of more than 25% and producing drier sludge cakes.
  • Water Treatment (Chlorination, Fluoridation and pH): Rapid homogenization of chlorine, fluorine, ozone or acids/bases for pH correction in drinking water (WTP) and effluent (WWTP) treatment plants.
  • Food Beverage Processing: Continuous blending of concentrated syrups, colorants, flavors, vegetable oils, margarines, tomato paste, and fruit pulps, ensuring consistency and quality of the final product without excessive shear.
  • In-Line Heat Exchange Systems (Heating/Cooling): The triple-action elements act as radial heat transfer promoters, eliminating hot or cold spots on the tube walls (plug flow) and ensuring a uniform temperature profile in the product.
  • Mixing Reactive Resins and Epoxies: Used to mix resins and catalysts in exact proportions (such as epoxies and polyurethanes) immediately prior to application, preventing premature hardening of the product in tanks.
