Interface Detectors

Point Interface Detector – ID Series

The ID Series of Point Interface Detectors, manufactured by Agar Corporation, are used for measurementand control of interfaces in all types of liquid/liquid and vapor/liquid separation processes, including emulsionsand foams. Advanced control capabilities can be used to automate disturbance responses, feed systems for defoaming and demulsifier chemicals, and eliminate cross-contamination from separation phases.

Available in different configurations, including 2-wire version with HART communication, the system offers high reliability, easy integration into control systems and increased operational efficiency.

Benefits

Precise control of the oil/water interface

Measures concentrations from 0 to 100% water/hydrocarbon, ensuring efficient separation and protection of downstream processes.

Reduced losses and cross-contamination

It avoids unwanted dragging between phases, improving the quality of the final product and reducing operating costs.

It avoids unwanted dragging between phases, improving the quality of the final product and reducing operating costs.

It allows automatic activation of valves, alarms and chemical dosing systems (defoamers and demulsifiers).

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE ID SERIES:

ID-200 Series (Conventional): It is the classic interface detection system. It requires external power (AC or DC) and offers a wide range of local outputs, including 4-20 mA signal, relay contacts (SPDT) for level alarms, and local light indicators (LEDs) for quick visual identification of the active phase (oil or water).

ID-200H Series (HART / 2-wire): It represents the technological evolution of the line. It is a system powered directly by the 2-wire loop powered, which drastically simplifies the wiring infrastructure. It has built-in HART communication for remote configuration, calibration and advanced field diagnostics.

AVAILABLE MOUNTING TYPES:

  • ID-201 / ID-201H: 1/2″ rigid rod (up to 3m long)
  • ID-202 / ID-202H: Rigid 1.1/4″ (heavy-duty) shank for more rugged applications and longer lengths
  • ID-205: The rigid rod is replaced by a high-strength cable that suspends the measuring antenna from the top of the vessel. Applicable when the interface’s measurement point is located at great depths, making the use of rigid rods unfeasible.

The main applications where this type of equipment is essential include:

  • Separator Vessel Control: Monitors the level of the oil/water interface and the presence of intermediate emulsions to optimize residence time and separation quality.
  • Operation of Desalinators (Desalters): Controls the saltwater interface and the emulsion layer inside the electrostatic vessel, preventing water carryover to the distillation tower.
  • Automation of Drainage in Storage Tanks: Automates the drainage of free water accumulated at the bottom of crude oil or refined product tanks, preventing the loss of hydrocarbons.
  • Optimization of Coalescers and Decanters: Monitors the efficiency of emulsion breakdown in real time, assisting in the control of dosage of chemical demulsifiers.
